Supported by the TUES program of the National Science Foundation (NSF), this course provides students with a strong academic background and hands on laboratory-based experience focused on energy-efficient hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The world is going through major energy and environmental crises, and it is critical to provide advanced education such as the one proposed. Although the area of hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) has been an active area of research for several years, there has not been a course structure that introduces these concepts to students as part of their curriculum. The proposed laboratory-based course is a brand new effort to integrate emerging topics to classroom education and disseminate the experience to other educational institutions.

One of the unique attributes of this course is to include industry participation in the development and evaluation of the course contents and laboratory modules. By using state-of-the-art applications, this course aims to generate excitement while developing a thorough understanding of theoretical concepts learned in various other courses. In addition to standard laboratory experiments, this course will also train undergraduate students to understand, adapt, work with, and implement new and non-textbook-based (industry or research grade) ideas and techniques. This will greatly enhance the students’ knowledge and confidence and prepare to take on challenges that are critical to the development of our Nation.
